It\u2019s important for teachers to recognize the signs of hearing loss and communicate any concerns with parents so that interventions and accommodations can be sought early. Below we review the impacts of hearing loss in young people as well as strategies for accommodating students with <a href=\"https:\/\/massachusettshearinggroup.com\/hearing-loss\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hearing loss<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Hearing Loss Affects Learning<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/massachusettshearinggroup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/teacher-class-hearing-loss-1280x848.jpg\" alt=\"Children listening to a teacher in a classroom setting.\" class=\"wp-image-1984\" width=\"224\" height=\"148\" srcset=\"https:\/\/massachusettshearinggroup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/teacher-class-hearing-loss-1280x848.jpg 1280w, https:\/\/massachusettshearinggroup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/teacher-class-hearing-loss-768x509.jpg 768w, https:\/\/massachusettshearinggroup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/teacher-class-hearing-loss-1536x1017.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/massachusettshearinggroup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/teacher-class-hearing-loss-scaled.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 224px) 100vw, 224px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asha.org\/siteassets\/ais\/ais-hearing-loss-development-effects.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">American Speech-Language-Hearing Association<\/a> (ASHA) reports that hearing loss can affect children\u2019s learning and development in four main ways:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Children with hearing loss often experience a delay in developing both receptive and expressive communication skills.<\/li><li>A language deficit may cause learning problems and reduced academic achievement.<\/li><li>Communication difficulties may result in social isolation and poor self-regard.<\/li><li>Having hearing loss may impact vocational choices.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>ASHA also reports that untreated hearing loss can have the following impacts:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Vocabulary. <\/strong>Children with hearing loss tend to have smaller vocabularies than their peers with normal hearing. In addition, they may have trouble learning abstract words and words with multiple meanings.<\/li><li><strong>Sentence structure.<\/strong> It\u2019s common for children with hearing loss to understand and produce shorter and simpler sentences than children with normal haring.<\/li><li><strong>Speaking.<\/strong> Children with hearing loss may have trouble hearing quieter speech sounds like certain consonants, meaning they don\u2019t produce those sounds and are difficult to understand.<\/li><li><strong>Academic achievement.<\/strong> Difficulty with reading and mathematical skills is common for children with hearing loss. Additionally, children with hearing loss tend to achieve one to four grade levels lower than their peers with normal hearing.<\/li><li><strong>Social functioning.<\/strong> Feelings of loneliness and trouble socializing are common for children with hearing loss.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Classroom Accommodations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/nces.ed.gov\/fastfacts\/display.asp?id=59\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Center for Education Statistics<\/a> reports that the number of children with disabilities who spend at least 80% of their school day in general education classes rose from 59% to 65% from 2009 to 2019.
